Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the interpretation of Section 23(1A) of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, determining that landowners are entitled to additional compensation from the date of possession until the date of the Section 4 notification. The Court held that the phrase 'whichever is earlier' should not lead to unjust outcomes for landowners, thus allowing compensation from 1st June 1977 to 8th March 1991. The appeal was allowed, reversing the High Court's decision on the compensation period.
