Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the appellants under Sections 306 and 498A IPC, affirming the necessity of a complete chain of circumstantial evidence for establishing guilt. The Court reiterated that while evaluating circumstantial evidence, if two inferences are possible, the one in favor of the accused must be accepted, as established in State of U.P. Vs. Ashok Kumar Srivastava (AIR 1992 SC 840). The appeal was dismissed for appellant No. 1, while the sentences for appellants No. 2 and 3 were reduced to six months under both counts.
