Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court ruled that Section 17 of the Administrative Tribunals Act, 1985, is no longer valid following the precedent set in L. Chandra Kumar v. Union of India, 1997, thereby stripping Administrative Tribunals of the power to punish for contempt. The Court held that contempt proceedings must be initiated in the High Court under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, rather than in the Administrative Tribunal. Consequently, the contempt applications before the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal were dismissed for lack of jurisdiction.
