Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that workmen employed as sweepers at the International Airport are entitled to regularization of their services following the abolition of the contract labour system as per the judgment in Air India Statutory Corporation v. United Labour Union [1996 (9) SCALE 70]. The Court ruled that regularization should take effect from the date of the Bombay High Court's judgment, and for those not covered by that judgment, from the date of the Supreme Court's judgment in the same case. The authorities were directed to compute the length of service for retiral benefits from the date of appointment by contract until retirement, ensuring disputes regarding service dates are resolved with prior notice to the workmen.
