Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court examined the validity of clause 3(i) of the Prospectus for the M.D./M.S./P.G. Diploma Entrance Examination, 1993, of Maharishi Dayananda University, which grants 10 extra marks to graduates from its own Medical College, ruling this practice as arbitrary and discriminatory under Article 14 of the Constitution. The Court held that such weightage effectively disadvantages candidates from other universities, violating the principle of equality in educational opportunities. Consequently, the Court directed the university to revise its admission criteria to ensure fairness and merit-based selection.
