Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the pay scales prescribed for senior scientists in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) violated Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution, as they were lower than those of their junior counterparts, thereby breaching the principle of 'Equal Pay for Equal Work'. The Court found that the notification revising pay scales was unjustified and upheld the appellants' claim for parity in pay. Consequently, the Court directed the ICAR to rectify the pay scale discrepancies in accordance with the established legal principles.
