Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that for land in belts 1 to 4, compensation should be uniformly awarded at Rs. 1.75 per sq. yard, as they are similarly circumstanced. The Court clarified that the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Act, 1984 extends enhanced solatium benefits to awards made between April 30, 1982, and September 24, 1984, including appeals decided after this date. The appeal was allowed in part, with the matter regarding interest referred to a larger bench, and previous rulings in Union Territory of Chandigarh and State of Punjab v. Mohinder Singh were overruled.
