Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the Food Corporation of India (F.C.I.) had the right to appeal against the compensation awarded by the reference court under Section 54 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, despite the bar under Section 50(2) regarding references. The Court clarified that the F.C.I. was a keen contestant in the proceedings and thus entitled to challenge the award. The appeals by the F.C.I. were allowed, while those of the landowners were dismissed, affirming the compensation fixed at Rs. 1,20,000 per acre.
