Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that casual labourers working under contractors at the Mathura Refinery are not employees of the refinery as per the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1971. The Court affirmed the Industrial Tribunal's decision that their termination was justified and that the Tribunal's directions regarding minimum pay and preference for regular employment were the maximum relief due. Consequently, the appeal for regularization and absorption of casual labourers was dismissed.
