Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that while the selection process for the posts of Excise and Taxation Inspectors was flawed due to the arbitrary allocation of 25% marks for the viva voce test, it could not quash the selections of candidates who had already joined their posts. The Court emphasized that a maximum of 15% for viva voce would be reasonable, referencing the principles established in Ashok Kumar Yadav's case. However, the selection process was upheld as it was not conducted with mala fide intent, despite the excessive number of candidates interviewed, thus maintaining the integrity of the selection process under Article 14 of the Constitution.
