Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court ruled that Articles 16, 330, 334, and 335 of the Constitution of India mandate the reservation of promotion posts for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) employees in the Post and Telegraph Department. The Court found that the 1983 policy, which equalized promotion timelines for all employees regardless of caste, effectively removed the earlier advantages enjoyed by SC and ST employees. Consequently, the Court directed the government to restore the previous reservation benefits for SC and ST employees in promotions, ensuring they receive the same advantages as in other departments.
