Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the classification of daily rated casual labourers in the Posts and Telegraphs Department into different categories based on the number of days of service for wage payment is unconstitutional under Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India. The Court emphasized that such classification is unjustifiable and opposed to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, 1966, particularly Article 7. The Court directed the Union of India to prepare a scheme for the regularization and absorption of casual labourers into permanent positions.
