Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that under Section 9 of the Tamil Nadu City Tenants Protection Act, 1921, a tenant has a statutory right to purchase only that portion of the demised land necessary for their convenient enjoyment, and this right is not absolute but subject to the court's discretion. The Court affirmed the lower courts' findings that the appellants were not entitled to this benefit as they were not in possession or occupation of the property, having let it out to sub-tenants. Consequently, the appeals were dismissed.
