Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court examined the Rajasthan Universities Teachers (Absorption of Temporary Lecturers) Act, 1979, and held that the fixation of June 25, 1975, as the cut-off date for the absorption of temporary lecturers was arbitrary and discriminatory, violating Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India. The Court emphasized that the lack of a rational nexus in the prescribed date undermined the principles of equality and fair treatment in public employment. Consequently, the Court directed that the temporary lecturers who were appointed before this date should be considered for permanent absorption without discrimination.
