The Court overruled the Madras High Court's interpretation regarding the detention of individuals convicted under Section 302 IPC, clarifying that such individuals must be released upon reaching 23 years of age. Consequently, the Court directed the Tamil Nadu Government to release all eligible inmates immediately.
