Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court examined the validity of the Madhya Pradesh government's order relaxing minimum qualification marks for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in medical college admissions, which was challenged under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution. The Court held that the executive order violated the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in these Articles, as it undermined merit-based selection and did not comply with the provisions of Regulation 2 of the Medical Council of India and Section 19 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. Consequently, the Court quashed the order dated 9th September 1980, reinforcing the need for adherence to established admission criteria.
