Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978, ruling that the legislation is justified under Article 19(6) as a reasonable restriction on the right to trade to protect the public interest. The Court found that conventional chits and prize chits are distinct categories, thus dismissing claims of discrimination under Article 14. The Court held that the Act does not violate the Constitution and is within Parliament's legislative competence under Entry 7 of List III.
