Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court interpreted Section 14(1) and (2) of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, establishing that property acquired by a Hindu female in lieu of maintenance is not excluded from the definition of property under sub-section (1). The Court held that for a female Hindu to hold property as a full owner, she must be in possession of it as a 'limited owner' and that the Act aims to enhance the social and economic status of women in Hindu society. The appeal was allowed, affirming the right of the appellant to the property in question.
