Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the Jatav caste is not recognized as a Scheduled Caste in the Datia District under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 and the Scheduled Tribes Lists (Modification) Order 1956. The Court reaffirmed that inquiries to establish that Jatav is a sub-caste of Chamar, which is listed, are impermissible under Article 341 of the Constitution. Consequently, the appeal was dismissed, upholding the High Court's decision that the appellant was not entitled to contest the election as a Scheduled Caste candidate.
