Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that under Section 20 of the Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Area) Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1948, the appellants were entitled only to the rents collected under Section 3(4) of the Madras Estates Land (Reduction of Rent) Act, 1947, and not to any excess amount resulting from the ryotwari settlement. The Court clarified that the rules framed under Section 20 do not conflict with the statute, as they are designed to determine compensation based on the unexpired lease period and net annual income. The Court upheld the respondent's calculation of net annual income based solely on the reduced rent for the preceding fasli years, rejecting claims for interest on withheld amounts.
