Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that under the U.P. Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act, 1951, a Hindu widow who inherits bhumidhari lands becomes the absolute owner and does not hold merely a life estate. The Court found that the Act does not indicate any residual interest remaining with others upon her inheritance, thus validating her gift of the lands to respondents 1 and 2. The appeal by the reversioners was dismissed, affirming the lower courts' decisions.
