Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that under Section 63 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1939, the Regional Transport Authority (R.T.A.) of Jabalpur had the authority to renew the permit but not to countersign it for the Rewa region as per Rule 63 framed under Section 68. The Court established that the R.T.A. of Jabalpur could not extend the permit's operation beyond its jurisdiction, and the countersignature by the R.T.A. of Rewa was invalid. Consequently, the validity of the permit for the Jabalpur region remained intact despite the High Court's ruling to quash the countersignature.
