Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the evidence presented to determine whether the Bhovi caste is synonymous with the Voddar caste was permissible under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950. The Court found that in 1950, there was no caste known as Bhovi in Mysore, and thus the Order could not have recognized a non-existent caste. The High Court's conclusion that Bhovi was equivalent to Voddar was upheld, affirming the election of the candidate from the Scheduled Castes constituency.
