Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the classification of Advocates in the Calcutta High Court into different categories for the purpose of room allocation does not violate Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law. The Court found that the Bar Library Club's alteration of its rules to allow all Advocates who undertake to plead, irrespective of their acting status, represented a significant improvement and addressed the concerns raised by the petitioners. The Court concluded that the classification was reasonable and did not amount to a denial of equality.
