Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that under Section 2(b) of the Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955, an employee must establish that journalism is their principal avocation to be classified as a working journalist. The Court clarified that part-time employment does not exclude an employee from this classification if they meet the necessary criteria. The High Court's ruling that the respondent was a working journalist was upheld, reversing the Labour Court's decision.
