Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that the closure of a division due to violent disturbances by workers constituted a lock-out under Section 2(1) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, and was distinct from a lay-off as defined in Section 2(kkk). The Court clarified that the expression 'any other reason' in Section 2(kkk) refers to reasons analogous to those specified in the section. Consequently, the workmen were not entitled to lay-off compensation for the period of closure, as the lock-out was justified under the circumstances.
