Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court interpreted Section 58 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1939, holding that the period for which a stage carriage permit can be renewed must be between three to five years, as specified in Section 58(1)(a). The Court clarified that the Regional Transport Authority is required to specify the renewal period when granting a renewal. The previous decision in V. C. K. Bus Service Ltd. v. The Regional Transport Authority was distinguished on the grounds of differing facts and legal interpretation.
