Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the Jammu and Kashmir Big Landed Estate Abolition Act, XVII of 2007, enacted by Yuvaraj Karan Singh, affirming his authority under Section 5 of the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution Act 14 of 1996 (1930). The Court found that the Yuvaraj retained legislative powers as an absolute monarch prior to the Independence Act of 1947, and thus the Act's validity was confirmed. The appeal challenging the Act's constitutionality was dismissed, affirming the lower courts' decisions.
