Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the U.P. Sugarcane (Regulation of Supply and Purchase) Act, 1953, and related notifications, ruling that they were intra vires the State Legislature and did not infringe fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19(1)(c), (f), (g), and 31, nor violate Article 301 of the Constitution. The Court clarified that the Central Acts concerning sugar and sugarcane, enacted under Entry 33 of List III, did not deprive the State Legislature of its jurisdiction. The provisions of the impugned Act were found to be focused solely on regulating sugarcane supply and purchase without encroaching on exclusive central jurisdiction.
