Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the introduction of small taxis and the fixing of a lower tariff for them did not infringe the fundamental rights of existing permit holders under Article 19(1)(g) and Article 14 of the Constitution. The Court reasoned that the classification was rational and did not prevent larger taxi permit holders from carrying on their occupation. Consequently, the writ petition against the Regional Transport Authority was dismissed, affirming that Article 19(1)(g) does not guarantee a monopoly in any occupation.
