Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court ruled that a Hindu widow's relinquishment of her estate in favor of the next reversioner and a stranger is invalid under Hindu law, as valid surrender can only be made to the next heir of the husband. The Court held that while a widow can enter into a bona fide compromise in the interest of the estate, such a compromise must be prudent and reasonable to bind the reversioners. In this case, the compromise was deemed neither prudent nor reasonable, thus not binding on the reversioners, following precedents such as Mummareddi Nagireddi v. Pitti Durairaja Naidu and others.
